Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, also known as the Swissy, is a large, strong, and gentle breed known for its working abilities and loyal nature. Originating in the Swiss Alps, this breed was initially used as a draft and herding dog for farmers. Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are among the oldest and largest of the Swiss mountain dog breeds, typically standing 23 to 28.5 inches tall and weighing between 85 to 140 pounds. They have a striking tri-colored coat with a black base, rich rust markings, and white on the chest, face, and feet.

Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are known for their calm, confident, and friendly personalities. They are loyal and protective, often forming strong bonds with their families and making excellent family pets. Swissies are generally good with children and other pets and are known for their stable, gentle nature, which helps them excel as therapy and assistance dogs.

Despite their size, Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are relatively active and require regular exercise to keep them healthy and happy. They enjoy long walks, playtime, and even hiking, as they are naturally athletic and love being outdoors. Due to their intelligence and willingness to work, they are highly trainable, though they can be a bit stubborn, so consistent, positive reinforcement is essential.

With their protective instincts, gentle disposition, and devotion, Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs make excellent family companions for those who can meet their needs and appreciate their loyal and calm demeanor.
