Leonberg

The Leonberger, often affectionately called a Leo, is a majestic and gentle giant known for its calm demeanor, loyalty, and versatility. Originating from Germany, this breed was initially developed in the 19th century as a multi-purpose working dog, intended to resemble a lion and serve as a companion for nobility, as well as a capable water rescue dog. Leonbergers typically stand between 25.5 to 31.5 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 90 to 170 pounds, with a sturdy and well-muscled build that combines strength with grace.

The Leonberger’s thick, double coat is water-resistant and comes in various shades, including lion-gold, red, sandy, and mahogany, often with a characteristic black mask. This lush coat provides insulation, making them well-suited for colder climates, but it does require regular grooming to prevent mats and tangles, particularly around the mane and tail. Weekly brushing, with more frequent grooming during shedding seasons, helps keep their coat healthy.
